Frequently Asked Questions

Your Questions, Answered

What is wargaming?

The term 'wargaming' usually refers to the collecting of miniature figures (representing troops both real and imaginary) combined with the playing of games simulating battles. Rules assign specific capabilities to the figures so that their actions are constrained (similar in concept to the way that a chess piece is only permitted certain actions).

There are many elements to the hobby including research, preparing and painting of the figures, social gatherings and competitive play.

Why pick the name Wessex Hobbies?

Well, we're based in the ancient kingdom of Wessex for a start, plus one of our founders served in the Wessex regiment continuing the tradition established in the 7th century and refined during the time of Alfred the Great. Given the group's interest in history, it seemed an obvious choice.

How often does Wessex Hobbies meet?

Members of the group participate in a number of events throughout the country. We will publish details of these as soon as we have the information. In addition, the group organises meetings at our Newham location approximately 4 to 6 times a year. However, please let us know if there is an event, or theme, that is of interest and we'll do our best to promote, attend or organise.

How do I join a meeting for the first time?

Just use the contact us page to let us know you are interested and we'll pass on the details.

Do I have to be a member to participate?

No, not really. If we publish an article, release a video or arrange an event that you're interested in, then just make contact.
